TEXAS STATE HOCKEY TEAM history

The Texas State Ice Hockey team is a registered Sports Club at Texas State University in beautiful San Marcos, Texas. The team was granted official Sports Club status in the spring of 2011 and began 2011 - 12 as their inaugural season. The team was founded by inaugural team president TJ Wolling. TJ’s love of hockey and countless hours of preparation resulted in Texas State University joining the American Collegiate Hockey Association as a Division 2 team. The team's first head coach was Gerry Wade. The team played at Chaparral Ice Rink in Austin on a limited budget in practice jerseys to conserve funds for ice time and games.

The second and third years (2012-2013 and 2013-2014 seasons) of the team saw growth in a number of players, as well as an expanded roster.  The arrival of new head coach Bob Smith and assistant coach David McShane added professional coaching and a bigger budget for the team. Coach Smith was a large contributor to team finances during his two year tenure with the Bobcats. The team continued to play and practice at Chaparral Ice in Austin.

In the fourth and fifth years of the team (2014-2015 and 2015-2016 seasons), one of the major happenings included a move to the Ice and Golf Center at Northwoods in San Antonio. The gaining of head coach Cosmo Dupaul.  Coach Cosmo DePaul was drafted in the fourth round, 91st overall pick in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. Coach DePaul brought a wealth of hockey knowledge and 12 years of professional playing experience to the young men he was coaching.

Beginning the 2016-17 season, the Texas State Bobcats and their up and coming Texas opponents would form together to inaugurate the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference. The brand new conference would feature the Texas Longhorns, Texas A&M Aggies, Dallas Baptist Patriots, UT El-Paso Miners,  Texas Tech Red Raiders, North Texas Mean Green, the TCU Horned Frogs, and your Texas State Bobcats. The Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference is a proud member of the ACHA.

In summarizing the five years that have passed, the club has gone from a rag-tag group of guys to a truly professional team. The program has seen major growth in its popularity and prestige around campus each year due to dedicated members, alumni, volunteers and the TXST Ice Angels. The home games have become a weekend tradition for students and a fun experience for those unfamiliar to the greatest game on ice. The rink is consistently packed with vocal fans cheering on their beloved Bobcats. With the lively college atmosphere of San Marcos  and the massive growth in enrollment at Texas State University, the hockey program has thrived within the central Texas region.

The program places emphasis on Academic Performance, Community Leadership & Standards of Play consistent with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
